Privacy Policy
Effective Date: October 11, 2026
This policy covers the LightPlan apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, and the website lightplan.app. LightPlan is made by Rivolu LLC.
In Short
- You don't need an account, and we never ask for your name or email in the app.
- Most of what you do in LightPlan stays on your device.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or track you across other companies' apps and websites.
- Some information has to leave your device for LightPlan to work: the places you look at go to the map providers that draw the maps, and a plan you choose to share goes to our server so its link works. Each case is described below.
Information That Stays on Your Device
- Your location: With your permission, LightPlan uses your device's location to calculate the sun and moon where you are, to show your position on the map, for sun and moon alerts and for widgets. These calculations happen on your device.
- Saved locations and settings: Stored on your device. If you're signed in to iCloud, your saved locations also sync between your Apple devices through your own iCloud account, which we can't read.
- Notebook: Notes, photos and voice notes you add stay on your device.
- Camera and microphone: AR Sky View uses the camera to show the sky live; nothing is recorded or sent. The microphone is used only when you record a voice note.
- Calendar: When you add a plan to your calendar, the system's own event editor opens; LightPlan doesn't read your calendar.
Information That Leaves Your Device
Maps and place search. To draw the maps and find places, the app sends the area you're viewing, the coordinates of the place you're planning, and what you type in search to the map providers:
- Google (Google Maps, Places search and elevation data) for the photorealistic 3D map, the 2D map and search
- MapTiler for the terrain map
- Mapbox for the shadow map
These providers handle this information under their own privacy policies. Google and Mapbox also collect some usage and diagnostic information about their maps, and approximate location, for their own analytics.
Mapbox telemetry (anonymous usage and location statistics sent to Mapbox) can be turned on or off from the ⓘ button on the shadow map. On iPhone, iPad and Mac it is off until you turn it on.
Sharing a plan. When you tap Share Link, the app sends the plan to our server so the link can open it:
- the place's coordinates and name, the date, time and time zone, and the map view
- where you'll stand (the observer pin), if you placed one
- an image of the map for link previews
- the app's name and version
Anyone with the link can see the plan. It's stored on our server (hosted with Vercel and Amazon Web Services) until a year after the plan's date, and at most 800 days (about two years) after you share it, so a link for a date further ahead stops working then. We count how often a link is opened, without recording who opened it. To limit abuse, we count the links made each day from an internet address and from an app install, keeping only one-way hashes of them, which are deleted after two days. We don't store your internet address or the app install's identifier with your plan.
Analytics. We use Amplitude to understand how LightPlan is used, so we can improve it. Amplitude receives:
- which features you use, and milestones such as finishing onboarding or saving your first location
- the answers you choose during onboarding, such as the kinds of photography you do
- subscription purchases: the product, its price, and how many days after installing it was bought
- whether you installed LightPlan from an App Store Search Ads ad, and if so its campaign, keyword and country (the app asks Apple for this through Apple's AdServices framework)
- a random identifier for your app install
- device and app details, such as model, operating system, app version and language
It doesn't receive your name, email, contacts or precise location. Amplitude may record an approximate region based on your internet address. We use this information only to improve LightPlan and to see which of our App Store ads work; it isn't used to show you ads.
Subscriptions. Apple processes all payments; we never see your payment details. We use Superwall to show subscription offers and check your subscription status. Superwall receives an anonymous identifier for your app install, device and app details, and your purchase and subscription status.
Support. If you email us, we receive what you send, and use it only to answer you.
Our Website
lightplan.app uses Google Analytics, which uses cookies to tell us how many people visit and which pages they read. Shared plan pages count how often each plan is opened, without recording who opened it.
How We Use Information
We use the information described here only to:
- calculate and show the sun, moon and light where you plan to shoot
- draw maps and find places
- open the plans you share
- provide and check subscriptions
- understand how the app is used, and fix and improve it
- understand which App Store Search Ads bring people to LightPlan
- answer your support requests
We don't sell personal information, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers.
Your Choices
- Allow or deny location, camera, microphone and notification access at any time in your device's settings. Without location access, the app works for any place you choose, but alerts and current-location features are off.
- Turn Mapbox telemetry on or off from the ⓘ button on the shadow map.
- Delete saved locations in the app at any time. Deleting the app removes the information stored on your device; your saved locations in iCloud can be removed from your iCloud settings.
- To have a shared plan deleted, or to ask about or delete analytics information about you, email us with the plan's link or your request.
Children's Privacy
LightPlan is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes to LightPlan or to the law. We'll note material changes in the app or on this website, and change the effective date above.
